It turns out, the inspiration for Adele’s instant-classic single, ‘Hello,’ wasn’t actually an ex-lover. Nope, it was Ellen DeGeneres! The talk show host shared the revelatory news in a video which may kill you with laughter. Watch!
It’s no secret that Adele, 27, and Ellen DeGeneres, 57, are good pals. However, “a lot of people don’t realize that [Adele’s] new song is based on a conversation we had,” Ellen informs her audience– and the world– in a sneak peek at the Oct. 29 episode of her talk show, The Ellen DeGeneres Show. With that, we see video evidence of how Ellen really did make “Hello” come to fruition– sort of. See the ridiculous video below!
We hear the first few bars of “Hello,” and just like in the video, we see a sepia-toned room, filled with objects. Suddenly, an old-school phone rings, and we see that the caller is Adele. “Hello,” Ellen says, answering that bad boy.
When Adele-sing responds, Ellen is delighted. “Oh, hey Adele, what’s going on with you?” Adele begins to speak/sing, however, Ellen has a hard time hearing over the loud crunching of potato chips. Finally, Ellen puts down the chips in order to hear more clearly, but she starts to get a bit annoyed with the pace of the convo. “Im in a hurry,” she says. “You’re talking so slowly.”
Adele’s spiel gets interrupted, though, when Ellen gets a call on the other line. Can you guess who it is? “You used to call me on my cell phone,” we hear someone say/rap. Yup, it’s Drake, who also recently dropped a call-related tune, “Hotline Bling.”
